Getting Started With Pronuncian

Free Assessment

How do you know what to study if you don't know what the problems are? Take our free assessment quiz first and find out how your American English pronunciation scores!

Practicing Sounds

The assessment may tell you that you have issues with particular English sounds; those are some of the most common problems people have. You can use the listening and speaking drills on our Sounds page to improve your pronunciation of those sounds.

  • Go to the Sounds page
  • On the chart, locate the sound you would like to study and click "Study Now"
  • Listen to words with that sound in the beginning, middle, or end to familiarize yourself with the pronunciation
  • If available under "Other Practice" for that sound, you can test your recognition of minimal pairs, words that differ only by that sound from another word
  • Use our TrueVoice recording system to record yourself saying the practice words, and listen to compare to our reference audio
  • You may also focus directly on minimal pairs study by going to our Minimal Pairs page to listen to the hundreds of sound word pairs in our library

Practicing Stress, Linking, or Pitch

More advanced pronunciation topics such as stress, linking, and pitch skills are taught primarily by our lessons and exercises.

  • Go to the Stress, Linking, or Pitch pages
  • Click on the Lessons menu at the left side of the page, and choose the topic you would like to learn about; choose a lesson titled "Introduction" if you are just starting out
  • On the Stress page you may also use the Syllable Drills audio to listen to examples of different word stress patterns
  • For a list of all available lessons, in all categories, go to our Lessons page and choose from the menu on the left side
