Introduction to Approximants
Approximants are consonant sounds which are usually represented by the letters w, y, l, and r. We will study approximants in two separate categories: semi-vowels, also known as glides (w sound and y sound) and liquids (l sound, r sound, and r-controlled vowels).
Just like vowels, all approximants in North American English are voiced, meaning the vocal folds are in use when producing the sound.
