Introduction to Approximants

Diagram of English vowels sounds for ESL students and teachers

Approximants are consonant sounds which are usually represented by the letters w, y, l, and r. We will study approximants in two separate categories: semi-vowels, also known as glides (w sound and y sound) and liquids (l sound, r sound, and r-controlled vowels). Just like vowels, all approximants in North American English are voiced, meaning the vocal folds are in use when producing the sound.
